ROTC

The Program
The AFJROTC (Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) unit is a "recognized unit," having been awarded the distinguished unit award in 2003, 2004, and 2005. The unit began in August 2000 and was the seventh unit activated in Texas, thus the name is TX20007.

The program has grown to more than 150 students, making it one of the largest ROTC programs in the Austin area. Units must have at least 100 physically fit students or 10 percent of the school enrollment, whichever is less. The students must be U.S. citizens and in at least 9th grade. Some people come into the corps thinking that it is a class of fun, but there is much more to it. Respect and responsibility are two of the biggest parts of the corps. The class focuses on aerospace science, history and physical fitness, but it also puts great emphasis on character, ethics, and what the program terms as the three "selfs" - self discipline, self confidence, and self esteem.
The Air Force Junior ROTC program began in 1911 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, by Army Lieutenant Edgar R. Steevers who was assigned the duty of inspector instructor of the organized military in Wyoming. He came up with an idea of noncompulsory cadet corps in high schools. The program was aimed toward making citizens rather then soldiers.
